This paper reviews the applications that SAW (Surface Acoustic Wave) filters and delay lines have to communications and radar systems. The development of SAW resonators at frequencies up to 1 GHz is reported together with their promise for stabilizing precision oscillators. Such oscillators could be useful, for example, as clocks for CCDs. Operation directly at 1 GHz eliminates the multiplier chains required for conventional quartz oscillators. The use of miniature SAW transversal filters for...

The design, fabrication and performance of a 16 input/1 output UHF switch matrix is described in this report. Each switch consists of silicon-on-sapphire PIN diodes, operates in the frequency range 950-1220 MHz, provides 60 dB on-off ratio, and reduces the DC power consumed relative to a previous device (Report AFGL-TR-76-0016) by using miniature integrated inductors. Using frequency domain techniques, a system was developed to measure the complex permittivity and permeability of different materials in the Ku band (12.4 to 18 GHz). A sample of fiberglass, teflon, FGM-40, and two different plexiglas configurations were chosen for this experiment. The newly developed measuring system consisted of a two horizontal-plane sectoral horn and a sample holder assembly. A 9.5 x 0.8 cm piece of the sample material was cut and fitted into the sample holder assembly. The...

Mike and I decided to do another release around January of 2016. This one took a while to complete. Both of us had other projects going on but here we are, near the end of August of 2017, ready to release. I feel that these are some of the best compositions we have done for our collaborations. Also, there was a contribution from a on-line contact of Mike's, who wants to go by the name of "Zebra and Donkey". He is responsible for "Radium" and Mike used a few of his sound...

A new digital system, the Prony Measuring System, for underwater acoustical measurements from 1 Hz to approximately 2 MHz has been developed at the Underwater Sound Reference Detachment of the Naval Research Laboratory. The heart of the system is a stable signal and sampling source and 12-bit, 5-MHz, analog-to-digital converter with a 4K buffer memory. A PDP-11/23 serves as a controller as well as a signal processor for averaging, and amplitude and phase estimation. The measuring system as a...

The response of frequency-hopping systems to various types of jamming is examined. Fast and slow hopping are defined in terms of the information bit rate. The impact of coding on the jamming susceptibilities of fast and slow hopping systems is analyzed. The required conditions for effective repeater jamming and effective partial-band jamming are explored. Frequency hopping is compared with pseudonoise spread spectrum. This Technical Report describes some of the transmit instrumentation, that was assembled using relatively inexpensive commercial-off-the-shelf (COT) components, for use in investigating the performance of frequency diverse array (FDA) antennas for secure communications. Brief descriptions of the bench-level set-ups used for characterizing the transmit waveform generation instrumentation are provided. Test results are included to give some indication of expected level of performance.

An algorithm that includes a collection of several subalgorithms has been devised as a means of synthesizing still other algorithms (which could include computer code) that utilize hashing to determine whether an element (typically, a number or other datum) is a member of a set (typically, a list of numbers). Each subalgorithm synthesizes an algorithm (e.g., a block of code) that maps a static set of key hashes to a somewhat linear monotonically increasing sequence of integers. The goal in...

Allan Deviation computations of linear frequency synthesizer systems have been reported previously using real-time simulations. Even though it takes less time compared with the actual measurement, it is still very time consuming to compute the Allan Deviation for long sample times with the desired confidence level.
